Love the phrase "insufferable self-righteousness." That describes these people perfectly. I recently heard someone use the term "pathological empathy" which I also feel is a good description. How ever you describe these people it seems to just boil down to a major difference in metaphysical beliefs. They believe people are born good and that society makes them do bad things so therefore they're not responsible for their actions whereas conservatives believe Man is an imperfect, fallen being. While I believe most people are decent and for the most part live honorable lives, you have to also recognize there's just bad people who commit acts of evil that need to be dealt with appropriately to protect the decent, law-abiding citizen and the civil society in general. Seems like common sense to me but we know common sense is no longer common.

This.

I think there are far more sociopaths and psychopaths than just the 10 million that are reportedly out there, here in the USA.

I used to be convinced that these personality types (appropriately funneled under the tent of "anti-social behavior") were simply broken people, something was shut off, lock them away because there isn't any rehabilitating them, but no, they're simply hyper-aggressively stupid, and what's actually switched off is the mechanism that activates the shoulder angels (Kronk from "The Emperor's New Groove"), in other words, the natural restraint that holds us back from being noticed by larger predators, and prevents us from being eaten by sabertooth tigers or short-faced bears, or even trampled by wooly mammoths simply doesn't exist, these are people who don't understand the word "no", or are unable to read and comprehend the potential danger in signs like "bridge out ahead".

This is actually what the Democrat party has tapped into in the last 30-40 years, rampant, unstoppable, distillable stupidity.

You think it comes down to metaphysical beliefs. And it does, but the difference is one side’s beliefs align with reality and one side does not. We have enough research and data now to know that, for example, antisocial behaviour is often a lower amount of serotonin in the brain, and are identifying the genes responsible for violence.

The mentally ill, or criminally stupid?

I had a conversation with a doctor two years ago, in regards to a resident that was, in unpolite terms, batshit crazy (and assisted by a minor stroke at one point). She had also given all of her money, her house, her cars, her everything to some greasy conman (she was a Boomer), and she then spent all of her time online on some legendarily stupid message board of similar Boomers who were all convinced that the world was going to end, and that silver and gold were awaiting those who were the true believers.

Yeah. We have a word for that.

It's called "stupid". And per her offspring...who wouldn't have a thing to do with their mother...she had blown through a sizable family fortune all because she was criminally stupid and believed that if she only signed everything over, she would get silver and gold back for all she had given to a swindler, hey, I get even more money than what my daddy gave me!

I used to think it was under the tent of mental illness, but no, after spending years with people who were diagnosed as being mentally ill, while there might be a segment of people who are truly mentally ill (PTSD folks from various wars, for example), I now think that the majority of these folks are actually misdiagnosed, and are simply homicidally stupid.

The doctor was in safe company (the nursing director and myself), and he was struggling to come to grips with an observation that he had while seeing this one resident (he made house calls to this assisted-living facility I helped run), with her rambling on and on about all the observations that she had about what was truly going on (I actually made it a point to stop and listen, all of the conspiracy theories she had were low grade moron beliefs, at least come up with something original to make it interesting).

It at the end of his struggling to try to come up with an explanation to what he just saw, he was saying, "it's almost as if....as if..."

...at this point I chimed in, "it's almost as if she's way more stupid than crazy?"

This doctor's face lit up as if every question about life, the universe, and everything had just been answered, and it was something he was completely unexpecting. He was then acting like he was wanting to share this revelation with someone, anyone else, even had his right hand over his mouth as if he were trying to shield how shocked he was, but then remembered that he was a doctor and said, "I didn't hear a thing", with his face still lit up as he turned and walked out of my office and out the front door.

Wow. Interesting. Well, at some point we have to look at the lunatics around us and wonder how intelligent they could possibly be. I never thought about it that way before; maybe lunacy is, in many cases, just a form of stupidity.

Beyond diagnosing them, our job going forward is to control them. The Democrats are masters at this; they understand emotional manipulation and they control the corporate media. As more viewers shift toward our media, we need to be adopting such techniques. Democrats control their droids using STORIES, which makes perfect sense; what captivates us as children? - story books with interesting stories; it doesn't matter whether they are true. So I wrote an article about this and sent it to the entire Republican caucus in Minnesota ("Open Letter to Republicans and their campaigns": https://daveziffer.substack.com/p/open-letter-to-republicans-and-their). The response was - nada, zero, zip. We will die on the vine here, forever believing that we can appeal to the Democrats' voters with our rational policy discussions.

Checking in from outside Everett, WA. The big news is high school kids protesting ICE at City Hall. I smell the Teachers' Union. Maybe we should let undocumented teachers teach, pay them less of course. We'd save money and could the results be any worse?

David Ziffer's avatar

In Minneapolis, the public schools declared two days of "distance learning" after the incident, "out of an abundance of caution", which I suppose is justifiable. But then they declared five weeks of optional "distance learning", which kinda tells you all you need to know about the residents. But I suspect that the real reason for the declaration is to free up "teachers" and "students" for protests.

I was a junior in college when the DNC riots took place in 68 in Chicago. Richard Daly (D) was Mayor, and Lyndon Johnson was President, and the country was in a comparably tumultuous mood.

Most of the DNC rioters were young and all were anti-war Democrats who wanted a nominee to stop the war. Possibilities were Hubert Humphrey, Gene McCarthy, and Bobby Kennedy, frontrunners, with the rioters supporting Kennedy and McCarthy. Daly and Johnson didn’t intend to allow rioters to cost votes, and the first night of rioting, Daly held a press conference and told the whole world on live tv he had ordered the CPD to carry live ammunition and shoot to kill.

It didn’t come to that because Johnson brought in the DEA on sort of an ad hoc basis. The Agents tooled up with axe handles from hardware stores and commenced breaking bones left and right. The rioting ended.

Minnesotans and the PNW crowd have it damned easy compared to the 60s, when demonstrators asserting their free speech rights truly had skin in the game and were likely to wind up with a conviction on their record, possibly spending a fortnight in a hospital bed, or maybe even spending a few decades as filler in a dam somewhere like the freedom riders. In those days a demonstration took guts, but these people, including Good, are pretty certain they aren’t going to be hurt. That’s wimpy. Cosplay. I don’t feel the least bit sorry about it, either. FAFO. My fucks warehouse is empty.

Eric Sowers's avatar

Well, that was last week. Add to the list carrying a pistol to a riot and engaging with law enforcement.

Excellent piece, really, thank-you.

Minnesota is clearly doomed - as is Oregon. The collective drive not actually to do good…….just the drive to appear to be good……all facilitated by their big egos but small intellects, and the bought and paid for MSM.

This twenty-first century mental illness is clearly a product of the decades-long Marxist strategy to destroy the family and faith in the church.

It is just as obvious here in Britain.

I am reminded of a line from a Larkin piece - though the poem is about death not politics - “Poor souls they whisper at their own distress”.

John Vezmar's avatar

Well said, David. The broad Somali immigration fraud issues ongoing in Minnesota and Minneapolis have probably been duplicated in every Democrat blue state and city, an obvious reason for the organized protests — and why police departments in those cities have been ordered to stand down and not assist federal agents.

Sunny's avatar

I happen to think the politicians in those blue areas, are in on the destruction of law and order. Time to kick them out of the US and get them off the voter rolls.

John Vezmar's avatar

Yes, I agree. We have the same lack of law and order issues all along the west coast in the major deep blue metro areas. The mayors order them to stand down, and includes violent crimes.

James M.'s avatar

This is kind of a hyper-charged species of suicidal empathy, it seems ("it's GOOD to be taken advantage of and preyed upon... loke how nice we are!"), swaddled in a kind of lazy, suburban disconnection.

When people REALLY understand poverty and crime (and ultimately violence) they tend to get very damn serious about these things. People living in paid-off homes watching Netflix and college football and busying themselves with consuming DoorDash and scrolling Facebook and Netflix have simply lost contact with the base realities of human existence. I don't think there's a way to instruct them other than by bringing these realities into view... which means puncturing their insulated and neurotic artificial world.

In the 2016 election, the first anti-Trump violent riots took place at one of his rallies in San Jose, California (my home state). I was watching footage, and noticed many protesters carrying Mexican flags, presumably against racist rhetoric and building a wall with Mexico. But looking closely I was surprised to see that those people had gang tats; they were gangbangers. Since then I had no doubt our Democrat leaders were doing a deal, and clearly demographics and gerrymandering were part of the trade-off.

Janine's avatar

PS the ideology of Antifa, BLM rioters, Occupy, etc is anarchism (in my downtown NYC neighborhood across the years, it's all the same people). They hate law enforcement in principle. It's not about a political issue. Well, who runs things if there's no law enforcement? Who ran no-go neighborhoods during riots? Why Democrats continually denied Antifa even existed is important to ask. Americans remain almost entirely ignorant about it.

Good essay. Regarding Nextdoor, I left it years ago. People on it bitch, complain, and report on trivial things. Probably why you don’t find the conservative type there.

David Ziffer's avatar

Well, Nextdoor is eminently practical for buying and selling household stuff locally, since folks who can see your posts are (by design) always within driving distance. And it really works well for people who are legitimately in need of help or advice; it actually performs the function that was formerly handled by neighbors actually knowing each other. So for those reasons I'm not ready to write it off. But yeah, it is maddening when most of the people in your area are leftist wingnuts who can't keep quiet about their politics.

This analogy with The Music Man is right-on. I recall attending a bandshell performance of the musical sometime during the early 1960s and always felt it was a parody of life in America generally. Dig a bit deeper and you will find that New Yorkers are much like Minnesotans. Many NYC residents have never left their crime ridden neighbourhoods in their entire lives, except perhaps for military service which isn't exactly mind broadening. They are more "small town" than anyone from rural Iowa or the furthest reaches of Idaho.

Greg's avatar

The author of _The Music Man,_ Meredith Willson, was himself a native of small-town Iowa who wanted to make people like the ones he grew up around look ridiculous to his more “sophisticated” friends in NYC and LA. (Today, we’d call him a hicklib, and for good reason.) Knowing that puts the bizarre moral compass of the show into perspective.

theylivehomocapensis's avatar

The Music Man, a classic reinterpretation of the Pied Piper. Not to take away from the author's observations, but if my memory is correct, the swindler actually did order instruments and band uniforms. There was a scene in the movie where it was explained that he (swindler) couldn't leave till after a month because that's how long it took the order of the uniforms to show up. The real 'swindle' was the fact that he was not a professor and did not know how to teach music.

David Ziffer's avatar

But the final scene would still be a complete delusion, since the band obviously can't play.

David Alexander's avatar

In the movie, the kids get together and make some bad noise while wearing cheap, ugly uniforms. The "delusion" actually is the delusion of the adults, who see beautiful uniforms and hear a great band.

theylivehomocapensis's avatar

Yes, I hadn't come to that conclusion myself watch the movie but I like the idea you came up with. I also hadn't thought of the librarian wanting to corrupt the town through books, but now that you mention it, it is a good point that you brought up.
